The Problem
Kids spend a lot of time looking at screens these days - this can cause a problem called Computer Vision Syndrome.
It causes eye pain, dry eyes, red eyes and sometimes even vision damage.
Why Are Kids More Likely to Have Problems?
Kids are less likely than adults to reposition themselves if they become uncomfortable, so they have worse symptoms
than adults usually do.
Can There Be Permanent Damage?
Yes! Our eyes need the chance to look at things far away (like when a child plays outside) as well looking at things up close
(like when a child looks at a phone or computer screen). If our eyes spend too much time looking at something up close, that
type of vision can become damaged. This is called nearsightedness.
Can We Do Something to Help Our Kids Prevent This?
Yes! Encourage kids to take “screen breaks” and to spend more time outdoors. Kids need Vitamin D from the sun and playing
outside is not only good for overall general health, it gives the eyes a chance to focus on things that are far away.
